Creating video content was an area of interest as I built my food blog to 600K users. In early 2023, I decided to start making long-form videos to expand the food blog’s reach. This also allowed me to experiment with YouTube SEO.
1.2M
views on YouTube
9K+
subscribers
3.3K
incremental revenue generated by SEO initiatives.
The Challenge
Significant research was required on how to create videos (from planning to production to post-production). If the video isn’t interesting or helpful, doing YouTube SEO won’t help the channel grow.
The other challenge was testing and learning what SEO works on YouTube.
For this project, I was fortunate to have a partner who knew how to shoot videos and edit them in Final Cut Pro. This allowed me to focus on video planning and YouTube SEO.

YouTube SEO
To optimise for YouTube’s platform and Google’s video carousels and featured videos, each video was created with:
- Keyword research
- Script optimisation
- Meta data optimisation
- Title & description optimisation
- Optimise video filename
- Closed caption optimisation
- Encouraged engagement
- Promotion across other platforms (such as Reddit, Facebook, IG, TikTok and Website)

Results
In less than 2 years, working as a team of two, we:
- Published 31 long-form videos
- Gained a total of 9K+ subscribers
- Reached 1M views on YouTube

Reflections
In hindsight, we could have achieved these results much sooner by publishing more frequently and pushing harder on promotion. However, due to my other commitments, this wasn’t feasible at the time of this project.
While we don’t post new videos as regularly as before, subscribe to our YouTube Channel so you know when we do!
